Guideline Index / ACS Style
01 / Author Info

Identify Author

List the author or organization. If no specific author, begin with the title of the page. For databases, include the database name.

02 / Title Style

Page Title

The page or article title uses sentence case. The website or database name is italicized if distinct from the page title.

03 / Citation System

Three Systems

ACS offers superscript, italic numbers, or author-date. For websites, the author-date system often provides the clearest reference.

04 / Access Info

URL + Date

Include the full URL and the date you accessed the page. For databases, include the accession number or CAS Registry Number.

Common Formatting Pitfalls

Correct ACS Implementation

National Institute of Standards and Technology. NIST Chemistry WebBook. https://webbook.nist.gov/ (accessed Mar 15, 2026).

Annotation: Organization as author. Website name italicized. URL and access date in correct ACS format.
Incorrect (APA Hybrid Error)

National Institute of Standards and Technology. (2026). NIST Chemistry WebBook. Retrieved from https://webbook.nist.gov/

Annotation: Incorrectly uses APA-style year in parentheses and "Retrieved from." ACS requires access date format without "Retrieved from."
